My Journey to 100K Followers on Instagram

How I Grew My Instagram Account to 100K in 1 Year

Yes, I really did it organically without buying any followers . . . I grew my Instagram account to 100,000 followers in one year! Between July 2014 and July 2015 I grew my @VoiceOfHair Instagram account from 0 to 100K followers. Then, from July 2015 to July 2016, that is only 6 months, I grew my account by another 150K to a community of over 250K!

As a result of my explosive growth I:

  • Became a social media influencer with brands and small businesses reaching out to me for collaborations
  • Monetized my account where I was able to charge for promoted posts
  • Was invited to speak at national conferences for start-ups, small businesses, and entrepreneurship to teach others
  • Replaced my income from my full-time position with the income generated from my site and @VoiceOfHair account

And most of all, I want to share with you some of my strategies for how you can grow you Instagram account. But, first, let me tell you why Instagram is the place to be.

Why Instagram?

So why should you focus on Instagram to grow your business? Instagram is where all of the action is taking place! With over 500MM monthly active users and over 95MM photos being shared per day Instagram is one of the most engaging platforms for business (even more engaging than Facebook). Let that sink in . . . over half a BILLION people use Instagram every month. That is over 6 Billion active users per year, which is close to the world’s population. For sheer amount of monthly users alone, you need to be in Instagram.

How Can You Grow?

Growing Instagram can seem more like an art than a science, but there are actually strategies that you can implement to experience growth quicker. Would you mind if I shared with you a few of my strategies for growing my Instagram page?

Well, here you go.

Here are 3 Strategies I used to grow my Instagram account from 0 to 100K in 12 months:

  1. Utilize Your Bio Effectively

Your Instagram bio is one of the most important ways for new and potential followers to learn about you. Unfortunately, too many people underutilize this space. Instagram only allows 150 characters to be used in the bio (and yes, that includes spaces and emojis), so you need use this space wisely . . . very wisely because every character counts. I tell my clients “waste no character” in your bio. Your bio MUST include some basic information:

  • Your business name or your name if it is a personal page (i.e., you are the brand)
  • What your business is about (e.g. Personal Trainer, Coach or Chef, etc.)
  • Your location (if you have a location based business)
  • Contact Information
  • Website link to buy your product/service
  1. Tailor Content to Your Specific Audience

One of the biggest distractors that you need to beware of while growing your Instagram account is to avoid the temptation to try to make your account look just like someone else’s. This often happens when you start your account at the same time as someone else and their account is growing at a faster rate. You may feel that you should post the same content that they post, so that you can see similar results. However, that is a bad idea! First, know that you are unique, and even if you are in offer the same product or service as your competitors, there is only one you and make that known. So, you need to study your own audience, pay attention to their interactions and even see whom they are following. Based on those insights tailor your content to what they may be interested in, while continuing to highlight your business. That way, you speak directly to your audience while letting them know that you or your business is the solution to their needs.

  1. Utilize Hashtags Effectively for Maximum ReachHashtag

This is so important that it could be an entire course by itself. However, I will share with you a few of my key strategies. The biggest way to ensure people know about your business is to effectively utilize hashtags. If you aren’t using them you will rarely ever get new visits to your page, period. However, the key to using hashtags is to use them properly and purposefully.   When determining which hashtags to use, consider that you need to use hashtags that:

  • Relevant to your industry
  • Specific to the content you’re posting (again, do not forget how to tailor content to your audience)
  • Your ideal customer may use to conduct a search on Instagram

Also make sure that you maximize the number of hashtags (up to 30 hashtags in each post).

These are just a few strategies and tips that you can start implementing TODAY to grow your Instagram account. Implementing these strategies will help you on your journey to consistently growing an audience that is genuinely interested in your content.

Hey, I’d love to share some of my secret strategies for using hashtags, and it’s FREE. This FREE gift is my ways of saying, “Thank You” for taking time to read this blog and for allowing me to help you on your Instagram journey.
